Wilderness Road State Park
A wonderful state park located in the Virginia Highlands close to the border of Kentucky, it's well worth a visit to see the excellent living history museum located on the premises. Martin's Station is a reconstructed fort that depicts frontier life during 1775. Several knowledgeable interpreters are on hand, including a blacksmith and gunsmith.
The 8 mile Wilderness Road trail is a multi-use double track trail that follows the historic path opened in 1775 by Daniel Boone, which made the Kentucky territory accessible to thousands of settlers during subsequent years. The western end of the trail connects to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. You can rent a bike at the visitor center for use on the trail. Other amenities at the park include several picnic shelters, a playground, and volleyball courts. The historic Karlan Mansion can be rented out for special functions.
