York River State Park

York River State Park is known for its unique coastal estuary. Here, freshwater and saltwater combine, creating a habitat rich in animal and plant life. The visitor center has informative displays explaining the coastal estuary environment. It also has ongoing educational programs and activities, such as kayak trips on the York River and nature hikes. Amenities at the park include an amphitheater, canoe and kayak rentals, a fishing pier, and picnic areas.

The park has over 30 miles of trails, some of which are dedicated equestrian or hiking trails. The 17 miles of single track trails, maintained by Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association (http://evma.org) are fun, flowing trails through the forested terrain.

The park contains an archeological site which site which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Croaker Landing, or Taskinas Plantation as it was once known, was a public tobacco warehouse used to store crops bound for England. It was in operation in the 1700s and 1800s.
