Pocahontas State Park
Located on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia, Pocahontas State Park is one of the most popular state parks in the Virginia Park System. It’s certainly easy to see why. With such a variety of activities to be had, there’s something for everyone here. Outdoor activities include mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boating. The park also has a large network of bridle trails. During the summer months, the large pool complex is a great place to lounge while the kids enjoy the water slides, playground pool, and water fountains. Canoes and paddleboats can be rented for use on Swift Creek Lake. There are several large picnic areas, a playground area for the little ones, and an amphitheater which hosts performances throughout the year.
Pocahontas is the largest of Virginia's State Parks, with over 7600 acres of land. The well maintained 45-mile network of forest roads can be explored by bike, hiking or on horseback. There are three different trail systems at the park: Lake View, Morgan and Swift Creek. The Lake View and Morgan trail system feature hand cut trails, providing narrow twisty single track that takes full advantage of the terrain. The Swift Creek trail system which is located on the northers side of the park is some of the most fun single track in the area. Blueberry Hill is an outstanding trail for beginner level rider – it’s smooth, wide and has few obstacles. Once a beginner masters Blueberry Hill, the next step up would be Box Turtle, which throws more roots into the mix to help improve skills. With the miles of forest roads and single track trails, Pocahontas is one of our favorites!
